22nd October

After a particularly frightful day (The 22nd October 2005), I decided to have a drink in order to satisfy a running joke of the day. The drink in question was a vodka martini (Yes, it was shaken). After one of these, and finding a distinct lack of olives or silverskin onions, my father and I put together our own variant and promptly christened it a 22nd October. So here goes.

22nd October

(To Serve 1, any more and it’s a straight multiplier)

  • 1 Measure Vodka (We used a 35ml measure of Sainsbury’s vodka, but any decent vodka will do)
  • Dash Martini Extra Dry (Or any other good vermouth)
  • Hint Dry Gin (We used Gordon’s, but again substitute one of your choice)
  • 2-4 Drops Fresh Lemon Juice (To taste, but the lemon/lime must be the same volume)
  • 2-4 Drops Fresh Lime Juice (To taste, but the lemon/lime must be the same volume)
  • 1/4 Pickled Onion (Not silverskin, this must be a full size pickled onion)

Place crushed ice into a cocktail shaker, then pour in the vodka, martini and gin. Add the lemon and lime juices, then shake as usual (6-7 times). Pour into a cocktail glass, skewer your 1/4 of a pickled onion on a cocktail stick and put it into the glass.

Sit back, drink and enjoy.

If you feel like it, this also works quite well if you frost the rim of the glass. Preferably before putting the drink into it.
